Pulmonary Tuberculosis, Infection Rate and Incidence Rate Among the Tuberculin Negative Group of Korean University Woman Students


Abstract
Tuberculosis control is one of the major function of the University Health Service in Ewha Women¢¥s University.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the incidence of pulmonary tuberculosis among the students whose tuberculin reaction was converted to positive during their school life.
During period of 19561965, total 20,388 students were observed. At their entrance to The University the tuberculin negative students were followed up by tuberculin test every 2 months until they were converted to positive for 4 school years.
The tuberculin positive converters were given chest X-ray examination every 3 months for one year after
their conversion.
The following results were obtained.
1) 94.4% of the students were tested for tuberculin reaction.
2) The infection rate at entrance of The University was 92.0%.
3) The conversion rate of tuberculin reaction among the negative students was 35.6%; the lowest was 2.5% in the freshman and the highest was 13.3 % in the junior.
4) Out of 441 students who had been converted to positive, 7 showed pulmonary tuberculosis; the pre-valence was 1.5%.
